Chester - river and canal

Chester lies on the Dee river that rises near Bala in North Wales.

The Cathedral

Chester Cathedral stands within the north eastern quarter. Much of the decoration dates from 19th century renovations. There has been a church on the site since the 10th century.

The Walls

Chester is the only city in the UK with a complete circuit of city walls still, more or less, intact. The walls first appeared as the perimeter fortifications for the Roman fort.

The Zoo

Founded in 1931 by George Mottershead. Chester Zoo is now the one of the foremost Zoos in Europe. Growing from it's original 9 acres around Oakfield House.
