More Big Wheel Pictures
A few more photos of the 60 metre high Big Wheel that is the centrepiece of Chester's Christmas celebrations. The "Winter Wonderland" is set to be a feature of the cities festive celebrations for the next three years.
Saturnalia 2010
To mark the start of Saturnalia renactors from Chester's Roman Tours take part in a torch light parade, annually, through the city centre. Carrying an effigy of the Roman god Saturn the procession proceeds from Town Hall Square to Castle Square. Along the route dancing, fire breathing and speech making occurs. Before the final celebration on the bandstand in the "Winter Wonderland" experience.
Winter Watch Parade
Dating from the 15th century when city dignitaries would process around the city ensuring that it was secure before handing over the keys to the Watch Men. Afterwards they would enjoy a banquet in celebration of the coming festivities.
Chester's Christmas Big Wheel
Although prevented from sampling the delights of the big wheel on the opening night due to high winds. The wheel stands as an interesting, if temporary, addition to the Chester skyline. Part of the "Winter Wonderland" Christmas feature, located in the Castle Square overlooking the river and the Grosvenor Bridge. The wheel takes its place along with an ice rink, children's rides, a santas grotto, bar and "Victorian Market".
Chester Christmas Lights
Chester's christmas lights were turned on by the Lord Mayor on the 11th November from a stage in Eastgate Street. The crowd was entertained by local talent and characters from local pantomimes and businesses.
