Chester Regatta 2010

Chester Regatta can trace it's origins back to 1733 when rowing races were held amongst fishermen on the Dee. Rowing in coracles and fishing boats the races became popular in the 18th century. In 1829, when the first Oxford-Cambridge boat race was run, Chester Regatta was the only established rowing race in the country.
With the establishment of the Amateur Rowing Association in 1882, regatta emphasis changed from individual boats to club entry. Today Chester Regatta is the oldest on the ARA calendar and the oldest rowing club entry competition in the world.
The course has moved over the years. Originally taking place between public houses. In 1840 it was rowed from the suspension bridge in the Groves to "The Mount" public house and back. In 1851 the race was run from Heron Bridge to Dee Fords. This years race was held from the Red House public house to the Earls Eye with some long course events starting from Herons Bridge. The boats regatta control, boat assembly point and commentators position being established on the park area at the side of Sandy Lane.
19 rowing clubs competed at Chester Regatta this year mainly drawn from the North West. With crews also from Nottingham, Loughborough, Staffordshire and Shrewsbury.
