Chester Funfair 2010
Chester's annual May bank holiday Chester Races Funfair arrived on Thursday 29th April for the week leading up to Chester Racecourse's first racing event of the 2010 season. Occupying the "Little Rodee" car park alongside Grosvenor Bridge. The Funfair is part of the touring season of Pat Collins Funfairs and runs until the 8th May.
Pat Collins Funfares are today run by the Harris familly from Brownhills in the West Midlands. They have run the fair since 1983. Pat Collins the founder of the Funfair was born in Chester in 1859 and began his empire with a roundabout and steam yacht. He was later to be a pioneer of presenting the moving picture in travelling and static cinemas. In the 1920's he was MP for Walsall and Mayor of the town in 1938.
The fair has a range of rides for young and old. In the past few years there has been some trouble in the evening but this year there is to be an increase in police activity.
This set of Chester Funfair pictures were taken on a rainy day. The fair not yet open. There is something evokative about funfairs without the people, smells, sounds and smells. Hightened perhaps here by the rain...
