Chester Zoo Zulu Dancers
throughout August Chester Zoo has played host to a troup of dancers from KwaZulu Natal, The Mighty Zulu Nation Theatre Company. In the past they have toured Britain, Russia, Italy, France,Germany and South Africa with a mixture of traditional Zulu dance and music. This is not the first time they have appeared at Chester Zoo. Their program is a great crowd puller with pulsating drums, dance and acrobatics.
Chester Street Entertainment
The Rows in Chester play host to a regular supply of street entertainers. Some are seasoned performers, working the crowds, selling CD's and collecting money. Some are more casual, standing in the street with violin case or cap hopeing for money from passers by.
Chester Races
Chester Racecourse is located in the city centre on an area of land between the city wall and the River Dee. This was the city's port from Roman times until the silting up of the river in the 18th century. Known as the Roodee, after the Saxon word "rood" or cross and the Norse word "eye" or island. In the centre of the racecourse stands the ramains of a stone cross.
Chester Town Crier
Here are a few pictures of the Chester Town Crier. The post is currently jointly owned by husband and wife team David and Julie Mitchell. These pictures are of David and his "mini me" town crier son, Spencer. David Mitchell won the 2008 titles of British Champion, Best dressed town crier and Peoples champion.
They proclaim from the Cross in Chester at midday every Tuesday-Saturday from May until the end of August, 10.30am on race days. Proclamations have taken place here since the 15th century. Today they welcome visitors from around the world, tell something of the history and declare any news to shoppers. The stocks, shown in these photographs, are a frequent feature of their routine as is an amount of audience participation.
Sign of the Times
Not only is there a plethora of "to let" signs and empty shops on the high street of our towns. But sale signage appears to be getting brasher. Chester has below the national average of empty retail premises and the authorities have been quite protective of the visual apperance of the Rows in the city. But I thought this development was quite striking. Two adjacent shops competeing for the attention of the bargain hunting public.
